EIL joins Motu Manawa Kayak Clean Up

15 July 2024

Late last month the EIL team jumped on kayaks and joined 44 other participants in exploring Auckland's most travelled through marine reserve - Motu Manawa - to help remove a total of 52 kg of rubbish.

We kayaked under the motorway and up into Te Auaunga Creek, finding plenty of larger items of debris including a plastic chair, inflatable sea biscuit, polystyrene, many plastic bags and more. Whilst on the hunt for rubbish we also spotted a couple of kotare/kingfisher and matuku moana/white faced heron.

Funded by the Albert Eden Local Board, Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa and The Bobby Stafford-Bush Foundation, this inaugural event was also assisted by Auckland Sea Kayaks, Friends of Te Auaunga/Oakley Creek, and Sustainable Coastlines as well as Experiencing Marine Reserves volunteers.
